Sometimes a cookbook comes out that is different than what we are used to. Few are actually familiar with Navajo cooking except for possibly tasting a Navajo Taco at a state fair. Navajo restaurants aren’t plentiful in most cities, and there aren’t really many cookbooks on Navajo cooking. However, Alana Yazzi has finally published an excellent cookbook filled with not only mouthwatering and authentic recipes, but also interesting and fun information on the Navajo culture. The Modern Navajo Kitchen: Homestyle Recipes that Celebrate the Flavors and Traditions of the Diné is a cookbook worth picking up by anyone who wants to expand their cooking repertoire.
Yazzi has included a list of ingredients that may be different from what we generally keep on hand, but most are easy to find in most larger grocery stores. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions. This makes it easy for both beginning and advanced cooks to make the recipes with perfect success. Yazzi has also added information, comments, and tips at the beginning of each recipe.

Each recipe is accompanied by a professional, beautiful photograph of the finished dish, which makes it difficult to decide which to make next. Of course, most cooks will want to start with her recipe for Navajo Tacos first; it alone is worth purchasing this cookbook.

All told, this is an excellent cookbook with unique, but down-to-earth dishes that are easily made, and delicious to eat.
