When we hear “healthy” cooking, most of us cringe and expect weird tree-hugger crap that tastes like we ate out of a weed patch. On the other hand, most of us want to serve healthy meals to our family and friends. Shawna Holman has done an excellent job of introducing us to a healthier way to cook appealing foods, as well as techniques that make our food healthier without sacrificing flavor in her excellent book, A Healthier Home Cook: Whole Food Recipes, Techniques, and Tips for Families That Want to Eat A Little Less Toxic. The early chapters go through the cookware that is healthier to cook in, including slow cookers and pressure cookers. Then she lists good pantry items to have on hand that are a bit healthier to use in the recipes. No one eating the dishes will know that they are eating healthier because most call for regular ingredients that are a cut above the convenience foods we have been using in our cooking and eating. The ingredients are available at regular grocery stores and it’s not necessary to go to a special store. Surprisingly, the recipes are mouthwatering and palatable without going too far over the tree-hugging edge. The recipes are presented in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions. The author also includes comments at the beginning of each recipe.

Most of the recipes include beautiful, professional photographs that give cooks a good idea how their finished dishes will look.

All told, this is an excellent cookbook and has plenty of ways to make meals healthier without going too far.
